Whistle player Éimhear Flannery has been awarded the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2023.

The competition's final took place on Friday evening, January 26th 2024, at the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork.
This annual event, which spotlights a different instrument or group of instruments each year, saw fifteen musicians vie for the prestigious prize. This year, the focus was on the flute and tin whistle.

Flannery, who hails from Rockchapel, Co. Cork, and is also a concertina player, performed two reels on the whistle—’Lady on the Island’ and ‘Union Reel’—as well as the slow air ‘Seán Ó Duibhir a Ghleanna’. Her performance earned her the custom-made gold medal and a cash prize of €2,500. The judging panel consisted of three experts: Mary Bergin, Rev. Gary Hastings, and Conal Ó Gráda.
